Wiveliscombe’s secondary school, Kingsmead Community School, is twinned with two schools in Kitwe in the Copperbelt Region of Northern Zambia.  The Hewitt Family (WECC members) were involved with this twinning from the beginning and have hosted several Zambian teachers.  Their daughter, Becka, was allocated a pupil, Isaac Mwewa, as a penpal and kept in touch with him, and has recently spent her last three university summer vacations working with a charity in Zambia, meeting up with Isaac on each trip.

In 2006 The Hewitts spent three weeks in Zambia, visiting Becka and various development projects, including meeting Isaac who is now a young pastor working in Kandabwe, a shanty compound adjacent to Kitwe. Pastor Isaac has got alongside the inhabitants, physically dug up stones and, as and when they could afford bags of cement, made blocks by hand and built “Rock of Ages” community hall to be used to provide primary education for children and, in due course, training for adults to provide both work-skills and income to make the project self-sustaining.

The Hewitts were particularly inspired by Isaac’s work, which exemplifies Zambian helping Zambian, and have sought to support the project ever since.  The charity WACIA (“Women and Children in Africa”) has recently taken on Rock of Ages as one of its projects which, as a registered charity, will facilitate tax-efficient donations and grant applications.
